Lyor Cohen Warns Music Industry Over ‘Unintended Consequences’ Of Article 13 Cohen invited John Shahidi, CEO of Shots Studios, a management company which produces content for musicians and artists to talk about ‘How to Build Fandoms on Open Platforms’. But Cohen also used the opportunity to warn of what he sees as dangers surrounding the passage of the new European Copyright Directive – including provision Article 13, which would see platforms like YouTube become legally liable for copyright-infringing content uploaded by its users. https://www.musicbusinessworldwide.com/lyor-cohen-warns-music-industry-over-unintended-consequences-of-article-13/

Tracking How Royalties Flow In the Digital Age, And How the MMA Will Play a Role As a songwriter or an artist, you sometimes have to wait up to six months or more to get paid for your work. It’s frustrating, even for those who have been working in the music industry for decades. If royalties were generated yesterday, why would it take half a year to reach your pocket? To understand this problem, you need to take a closer look at the entire business process. Here is a poster that captures all the nuts and bolts of the music industry in a single snapshot. While it is mainly constructed from a European point of view, the U.S. flow of revenues will increasingly look like this once the music licensing collective and the blanket mechanical license created by the Music Modernization Act begin functioning on Jan. 1, 2021. https://www.billboard.com/articles/business/8481906/how-royalties-flow-digital-age-mma-artists-publishers-guest-column

3 Big Ways Streaming Is Transforming Music From the way audiences listen to music to how songwriters make music, major streaming platforms have changed music so completely that we won’t fully understand what it all really means for some time. But while the long-term impacts from music streaming are difficult to predict, there’s plenty of massive transformations underway we can talk about now. Here’s three of them... https://blog.reverbnation.com/2018/10/25/ways-streaming-is-transforming-music/

A&R 'Moneyball' is hotter than ever. But will it actually improve the music business? Apple’s recent acquisition and hire of A&R analytics startup Asaii is the latest milestone in a brief, crowded and as yet inconclusive history of data-driven ‘Moneyball’ in the music business. As long as record stores have existed, data in some form has always played an important role in music marketing and promotion campaigns. But over the last five years, major labels and streaming platforms have been pouncing on data partnerships and startup acquisitions at an unprecedented rate, with the hopes of using algorithms to discover – and predict – the next big pop star.  https://www.musicbusinessworldwide.com/ar-moneyball-is-hotter-than-ever-but-will-it-actually-improve-the-music-business/

A deeper dive into how artists are getting discovered on Pandora Pandora is a service widely recognized for its ability to promote the discovery of new artists. Combining the power of Pandora’s Genome with the genre expertise of our curation team, artists are constantly being recommended to audiences most likely to engage with their music. While we recently introduced two new metrics to better share the scale of artists on Pandora with Monthly Unique Listeners and Streams, today we are very excited to share more context around how and where artists are getting discovered on the platform.  https://blog.nextbigsound.com/artist-discovery-pandora-98d60a605f5b

4 Things Every Blogger Wants You to Know About Music Publicity Doing your own PR is hard, there’s no way around that. But when your budget is tight or you just want the experience (which I highly recommend to all artists when they first start out), knowing how to put together a strong PR campaign is a must. While there’s a lot to learn through trial and error, we wanted to offer you a bit of a cheat sheet when it comes to contacting blogs and pitching your music to the masses. http://blog.sonicbids.com/music-publicity-blogger-tips

How to Supercharge Your Marketing With Hashtag Research You know hashtags can extend your reach, right? You know you can get more shares, more traffic, and more followers, right? So you toss a few hashtags into your tweets and Instagram posts based on the most obvious words… STOP! Hashtags can be very powerful on Twitter and Instagram. And LinkedIn is even pushing hashtags, so who knows? The power of hashtags on Twitter is visually evident on this graph. But doing research pays huge dividends. We recently prepared tweets for two different divisions of a huge organizational client. We did the research. And we worked with each division to write the tweets. It was beautiful. https://tweakyourbiz.com/?post_type=post&s=How+to+Supercharge+Your+Marketing+With+Hashtag+Research

Here’s How Indie Artists Will Make Money With SoundCloud Premier Today, SoundCloud announced that it is opening up its direct monetization program to the public, finally giving most artists the ability to make money off of the platform. The program, called SoundCloud Premier, was created four years ago but has been limited to an invite-only beta until now. SoundCloud’s self-monetization move follows Spotify’s recent announcement that it would begin letting indie artists make money off of songs that are self-uploaded to its platform. https://www.theverge.com/2018/10/9/17955596/soundcloud-pay-indie-artists-premier-monetize-program

Facebook Is Looking More Like MySpace And That's Good News For Musicians, Labels Facebook is rolling out new music features, after recent deals with the major labels. The results feel a lot like a modern version of MySpace Music, which veteran Hypebot readers may remember was once the #1 marketing platform for indie and DIY music. New Facebook music features, like the ability to add songs to your Profile and Facebook Stories, are turning the massive social network into a major viral music marketing opportunity. https://www.hypebot.com/hypebot/2018/10/facebook-is-looking-more-like-myspace-and-thats-good-news-for-musicians-labels.html

Can Radio Survive Without Passion? A Cautionary Tale There’s a furious debate taking place about the future of broadcast radio. Some pundits believe that music streaming services, podcasts and changing technology will render “radio” obsolete.  Others opine that radio offers unique advantages that can be successfully evolved in a digital age. In a series of articles, we will explore the arguments surrounding radio, pro, and con. Entertainment is more than ever about passion. The passion we have for binge-watching Breaking Bad, or discovering new podcasts, or beating your friends at Candy Crush. Nowhere is that passion more vigorously expressed in the musical artists that we follow and listen to. http://www.musicwatchinc.com/blog/can-radio-survive-without-passion/

The Last Format Streaming capitalizes on the utopian hopes attached to the mp3 A few months ago, Future, the Atlanta-based rapper, released his latest solo project, Beast Mode II, and my immediate thought was: I want the mp3s. I went to iTunes: Nothing. Amazon: Nada. Livemixtapes, a former go-to site for mixtapes: No dice. The songs readily existed in a streamable form, and yet I still wanted to own the mp3s. Why? Holding music, either in your hand or on a personal hard drive, is a relic of Obama-era music consumption. Though vinyl sales incrementally increase year-over-year, the rapid freefall of CD sales continues joined now by digital downloads. While over 223 million songs were digitally sold over the first half of 2018, overall numbers dropped over 27 percent in that same time period. https://reallifemag.com/the-last-format/

Black Hawk

I cannot imagine a life without music, without dreaming or without moving and growing. I found different ways of expressing this cherished feeling that has always lived inside of me, that kept me going. I could call it creativity but I think that would not cover the charge for me. To me, expressing one’s creativity is like eating or breathing, it’s essential.

I call it spirituality, it’s like life expressing life. Even though I have not always been very expressive as a person, I have always been creative. Creativity is a way of living life and is not only determent by a form of art. I think that life itself is the ultimate form of art, savoir vivre…

Projecting beauty, projecting possibilities in whatever situation I may find myself. Finding ways to express awareness, kindness and comprehension in any way, without getting mellow or cocky about it… Just as a way of being, following natures nature… A simple conscious and open way of being me… To live and to let live…

Respect all life, nature and who I am…

I have experienced that, in doing so, I have often felt scrutinized. I guess that’s all part of the deal. I guess that it shows opinions, and opinions are just opinions. I really believe that if we all could take our own opinions a little less serious, the world would be a nicer place to live a life, transcending difference into diversity, separateness into uniqueness…

I guess that deep inside I must be an optimistic guy, realistic too… I have always thought of that as a special gift of life, whatever life may be, it loves me and has always been nice, kind and generous towards me… It loves me as much as I love it.

As I wrote in one of my songs, I have always lived my way, did what I thought I had to do… Sometimes I had good ideas, sometimes I had ‘not so good’ ideas, but I think that until now I lived a fantastic life and I’m thankful for that, every day…

I traveled a lot, I have met some amazing people and cultures. In doing so I experienced what we all have in common, our shared origin and the oneness of all that is. The one that expresses itself through the many… I found that life, or existence, has many layers, like different parallel realities. Every one of them creating and sustaining the other ones…

That is what I love to express through my artworks, whether it is my music or my visual artworks, my lyrics or my talking… It is layers of consciousness inspiring each other, melting together, celebrating oneness… Showing something or showing many things, it’s in the eye of the observer that life finds its meaning or purpose. It’s in the heart of the receiver that life roots.

Life should be a celebration, with its ups and its downs. Life isn’t about protecting one’s comfort-zone… Life is an invitation to experience all of it… To expand and to grow. Detached and free.  Life is movement… It is an invitation to participate, to express and to communicate its colors, its sounds, its forms and its ways...
In any way...
