Bison Hip

“We’ve arrived at the party fashionably late…”
Bison Hip were formed by long-time friends during a lockdown Zoom call in 2020. “I don’t know who actually suggested it first”, explains vocalist Paul, “but right away it just seemed like a great idea. Maybe it was the mid-life crisis at play!” The band are all over 50, with the exception of keyboard player and spring chicken Steven, who clocks in at a youthful 40. By the time they finally got together in early 2021, the blueprint was clear. “We wanted to take our love of blues and rock, and mix it up with our experiences of life” adds Paul. “Between us, we’ve been through so many things in life, ups and downs, some successes and plenty of failures, we wanted all of that in the music. Lastly, we needed to wrap it up in the DNA of our hometown, Glasgow, and hopefully that’s what we’ve achieved”. Built on the backbone of true Scottish grit, the ethos is clear: real musicians, real instruments, no click tracks, culminating in a unique blues rock sound with real life stories. With the release of their debut EP ‘Dear Greens and Blues’ in March 2022, Bison Hip have hit the ground running. “There’s plenty more to come, we’re on our way up!”

Bison Hip are: Paul Sloway – vocals | Malcolm Button – drums
Steven Radziwonik – keys | John Gilmour Smith – guitar | Graeme Carswell – bass

Bison Hip are a Glasgow based Blues Rock band, formed during a lockdown Zoom call in early 2020. “I don’t know who actually suggested it first”, explains vocalist Paul, “but right away it seemed like a great idea. Maybe it was the mid-life crisis at play!”. The band are all over 50, except for keyboard player Stevie, who clocks in at a youthful 40. “We wanted to take our love of blues and rock and mix it up with our life experiences” adds Paul. “We’ve been through so many things in our lives, ups and downs, some successes and a whole load of failures, we needed that to be reflected in the music, in the lyrics. Lastly, we needed to add some of the character our of hometown, Glasgow – I hope we’ve achieved that”. The band have drawn from a wide range of influences. “Hard Again by Muddy Waters was one of the albums that got us through lock down, that reinvigorated our love of not only blues, but music in general”. The Bison Hip ethos is clear: real musicians, real instruments, no click tracks, culminating in a unique sound with real life stories. “We’d love to inspire musicians of a similar age group to dust off those guitars and get out there to tell the stories of their own lives”. The debut EP, Dear Greens & Blues, is available now.

The John Williams Syndicate with Petula Clark ‘Luminescent’ preview

One year on from their debut collaboration for the sensational ‘New Flag’ single, The John Williams Syndicate and Petula Clark return with the brilliant ‘Luminescent’. This release is a new version of the song from the highly acclaimed album ‘Out of Darkness’.

John Williams has had a career where he’s signed and/or produced The Housemartins, The Proclaimers, Robert Plant, Simple Minds, Debbie Harry, Blancmange and Beth Nielsen Chapman. He brings all of that experience to the fantastic album from his Syndicate, which appeared on several ‘Best of 2021’ listings, and continues to receive grand praise:

“Williams has been able to call on the cream of his heavyweight friends to make a very pleasing album. A debut more than worth the wait”. Record Collector

“An excellent offering utilizing the vocal talents of some of those he’s worked with. The song writing is of the highest quality. A very enjoyable listen”. Maverick Mag.

"10 well-crafted songs sumptuous melodies, intricate arrangements, sensuous phrasing & sparkling instrumentation". ‘Out Of Darkness’ has an essential pop-rock feel that will surely be embraced with open arms by BBC Radio 2, but has a potentially wider appeal”. 4**** Get Ready To Rock

After the achievements of 'New Flag' (with Petula Clark) on radio, The John Williams Syndicate’s new release sees a renewal of that enduring relationship, and is available from the 25th of February. Whilst the debut single received airplay across local, national, and international broadcasters, ‘Luminescent’ is poised for even more success. Featuring a beautiful and haunting vocal, this recording showcases pop songwriting at its finest.

John has produced albums and written songs with Petula Clark and has assisted her career for the last 20 years. She’s an actress, composer and one of the most revered and renowned singers of any generation in popular music. She’s the complete vocalist, a great lyric interpreter, and reaches the core of every song she sings. She’s sold 68 million records in her lifetime.

Since the mid 70’s John has been part of every aspect of making and marketing music. He’s been a record plugger, a label manager, head of A&R, a songwriter, a recording artist and a BBC Radio 1 session producer. As a record producer he has celebrated No 1 singles and albums with hugely talented artists and has had four Top 4 albums including a recent No.1 with Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbot, who he continues to work with.

Last year John stepped out front and released the album “Out of Darkness” by The John Williams Syndicate which received amazing reviews and airplay.

Nicole Barrett

I am so excited to share my latest three singles with the world.  Song of the World was written as a reminder to our humanity and was inspired by the book Handbook for the New Paradigm by George Green.  My Fourth of July was written as an ode to survivors of narcissistic abuse.  God Save the Kids is dedicated to victims and survivors of child trafficking.  I would like to thank Jason Shavey of Synergy Productions for producing this project and Brad Blackwood for Euponics Masters who mastered these tracks.  I had the opportunity to work with some of the most talented musicians on this project including pianist Tom Kellock, guitarrist Lyle Ronglien, bassist Garey Shelton and drummer Ben Smith.  Thank you to CDBaby and Discmakers and all other organizations and radio stations, especially Women of Substance Radio and Coast2Coast, for supporting independent artists such as myself.
